Mikhail Vrubel, Seated Demon (1890)
If there is something fascinating on this paiting it is not the technique Vrubel uses - it is the main and only character. The most peaceful demon I know, and fair to say, the only one. Vrubel here presents the idea of the devil-man, he marks the end to all the man-eating and man-punishing devils from the hell we the people were used to see in Western art since Middle Ages. Vrubel’s demon is the sad one, maybe he is pondering over his actions? It seems to me so.
Konstantin Flavitsky, Princess Tarakanova, in the Petropavlovsk Fortress at the Time of the Flood
Old favorite sketch from SNL. Can’t believe I actually found this online.
“How do I die?”
“In an insane asylum”
“I KNEW IT!”
