‘Vader’s Dream’ by Kirk Reinhert from ‘Star Wars:Visions’
Amidala really seems to inspire artists to do some of the best Star Wars art I’ve ever seen. The character lends herself to so many artistic styles but they never go wrong with Art Nouveau and the inspiraton of Pre-Raphaelites. This piece reminds me of the awe inspiring works coming out of the Victorian era when Romanticism was at its height. The contrast of grace and nature with industialisation. I wouldn’t be surprised if that is what Lucas had in mind. Padme is at her core a nurturer, she mothers first her planet, then the universe and dies birthing the hope for a new age. Anakin isall about technology, from the boy podracer to the half man half machine he becomes. The closer he is the Padme the more organic he is. Victorian artists would often use analogies for this struggle, William Blake’s Songs of Innocence and Experience the most famous but also there was a massive adoration of Ancient myth. The admiration of the Greeks lead to the neo classical architecture that is in every British town. Rossetti and the pre-raphaelites tended more towards the Italian and Medieval British stories. Works such as The Lady of Shallott by John William Waterhouse drew on Arthurian Romance and its clear the connections are there.
I can’t believe I just wrote that much about star wars.
This morning I’ve decided I’m going to create a line of jewelry inspired by Neo-Victoriandustrial violinist, Emilie Autumn. She’s been my muse for years, for her inventive and ornate costume creation, her dedication to her vision and the Victorian asylum world she’s created, her destigmatization of mental illness, her commitment to pink hair dye, and her embodiment of Neo-Victorianism. Everything she creates, both musically and aesthetically, has such attention to detail and expresses both beauty and torment.
For those unfamiliar with Miss Autumn, here’s just a glimpse… First, a few pics from her stop in the UK earlier this year, via Metal Discovery.
I also just love that fact that she tours with two of my favorite ladies, Veronica Varlow and Aprella. In the past, Ulorin Vex was a part of her group of Bloody Crumpets as well.
And some photos from this year’s lovely shoot with Bizarre mag
