Right, due to one or two requests and an ever increasing desire to avoid work, I move onto a topic I’m both enthusiastic and informed about. The Plymouth Steampunk Scene.
The Whole thing began with C103 having a pirate fancy dress night for their Friday night rock night. Which we were regulars of at the time. We joked we should do an “airship pirate night” (I guess in response to the Abney Park Song “Airship Pirates” and so Myself, Mel, Adam and Pete decided to head to C103 in improvised steampunk outfits, where we were joined by Lydia and Tweedie after I’d advertised the idea on Facebook.
Since When we’ve done other nights out to local rock and Goth nights, particpation with local photographers for photoshoots, as well as recently a student photgrapher. As well as the ocaisional random steampunking to the pub or to the seafront. With bigger and bolder trips planned such as to the oxford Steampunk exhibition and possibly to steampunk gigs. Which I have been appointed by a democracy of Apathy. Being the enthusiastic one, I have been appointed “Captain” of our little airship crew (a title used incredibly tongue in cheek by all) so may or may not happen.
Looking back, not only have our numbers increased but our ‘costumes’ have improved, originally starting from vague gothery with the added goggles or top hat to some of us both making and searching for different items, with several of us working on different and themed ‘costumes’ or outfits, as well as the making of props such as fans, guns and so forth. For a group of us, particularly the original few members this has been around an idea of a slowly written story by yours truly about the airship “Miranda” in late Victorian England, the first versions of which can be found here. With yours Truly taking the Role of “Captain Thomas Sutherland,” this although a frivolity and a little pointless, entertains us and serves as a focus for clothing ideas and so forth.
To all Plympunks, I hope its not too presumptive you make me very proud, and im very glad to be part of this formative Subsubculture.
