Swiss pikemen and German landsknechts engaged in close quarters fighting, known as “push of pike” or “bad war”. This manner of fighting was extremely chaotic and brutal, and once soldiers got inside the range of each other’s pikes closer range weapons like swords and halberds became far more effective.
