DEMONOCRACY: ALL HELL BREAKS LOOSE IN 1905 RUSSIA
Demons and Free Refreshments at the September 9 Opening Reception. Discover the satirical journals of revolutionary Russia and enjoy free refreshments this Friday, September 9, at the opening reception for Demonocracy: All Hell Breaks Loose in 1905 Russia. Please RVSP here or call (213) 740-1744 if you plan to attend.
About the Exhibition. The year 1905 shook Russia and challenged the power of Tsar Nicholas II. Strikes, protests, and mutinies spread across the country. Artists and journalists took advantage of this situation to create a multitude of satirical journals that portrayed bureaucrats as demons, imps, incubi, and fiends. These items on view are from USC’s Institute of Modern Russian Culture and are available online through the website of the Russian Satirical Journals Project and the USC Digital Library.
