Traquair House, Peebleshire ~ Sir George Reid (Scottish, 1841-1913)
Traquair House, near the Scottish Borders, is supposedly the oldest inhabited house in Scotland. The open gates in the sketch are almost identical to the famous Bear Gates at the front of the house, although they have been closed for 250 years. Bonnie Prince Charlie stayed at Traquair House in 1745 and after he left, the 5th Earl of Traquair locked the gates and vowed not to open them again until the Stuarts were restored to the Scottish throne.
