A Quiet Read (circa 1900). William Kay Blacklock (English, 1872-1924).
Blacklock studied at the Royal College of Art in London. He joined a colony of artists in Walberswick. He was a regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy between 1897 and 1918. He also regularly exhibited at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters.
Blacklock drew on the traditional Victorian subject matter of rural and coastal everyday life, at times taking an idealised view of nature and rural poverty. His work sometimes shows the influence of the French Social Realists.
