Same “art moderne” jacket artwork by Arthur Hawkins, Jr., as the 1934 first printing. An amoral young tramp.  A beautiful, sullen woman with an inconvenient husband.  A problem that has only one grisly solution. Banned in Boston for its explosive mixture of violence and eroticism, it is a classic of the roman noir. It established Cain with his unsparing vision of America’s bleak underside, and was acknowledged by Albert Camus as the model for The Stranger. Later filmed using the same title by MGM in 1946 starring Lana Turner.
