questionableadvice:

~ Singleton’s Nashville Business Directory, 1865“Attached to the ST. NICHOLAS RESTAURANT is a RIFLE and PISTOL GALLERY, a BILLIARD SALOON, splendidly furnished with Sofas, containing eight of the Latest Style and Improved Billiard Tables; also, a fine TEN-PIN SALOON. A BAR, well supplied with pure Old Brandies, Whiskies, Wines, Ales, Cigars and Tobacco.”

I like it. Have a meal then wind down shooting a few targets on the rifle gallery.

Printemps (French for “Spring,” as in the season) was founded in 1865, by Jules Jaluzot and Jean-Alfred Duclos. The store was designed by noted architects Jules and Paul Sédille and opened at the corner of Le Havre and Boulevard Haussmann, in Paris France on 3 November 1865. The building was greatly expanded in 1874, and elevators (then a great novelty) from the 1867 Universal Exposition were installed.

Faithful unto death. 1865. Sir Edward John Poynter. English.1836-1919.
oil on canvas.       http://hadrian6.tumblr.com

Loyalty is mightier than fire.

Walker Art Gallery:

This work illustrated the epitome of devotion to duty for Victorian morals. The Roman sentry stands at his post whilst Pompeii and its citizens are destroyed by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79AD. Scattered on the ground can be seen coins and other valuables, whilst in the background people try to save themselves and their possessions from the debris. Despite this and his obvious trepidation, the soldier still stands firm.

Poynter’s source was the excavation at Pompeii of the remains of a soldier in full armour. This was used as the basis for an imaginary incident in Bulwer-Lytton’s popular historical novel ‘The Last days of Pompeii’.

In Paris, the fad for Japanese things goes back to the 1850s, and it was less frowned upon, or mocked, than later in London.

Well, there’s one way to get to the moon. No promises about not smashing into it, though.
