Les Prévoyants de l’Avenir - 1893 French Art nouveau advertising poster

Here is a list of services that my own church (Alton Abbey) ran in 1893 when they had a house in Calcutta.
A few things I have noticed are the Missa Cantata on Sundays as the principal service, rather than Sung Matins which was usual for nearly all churches, low or high at the time. Also the name ‘Missa Cantata’ seems somewhat advanced and ‘Popish’ for 1893.
Finally the provision for 1 1/2 hours confession time on Saturday evenings is something one doesn’t see these days (usually 15 mins before Sunday Mass, or by appointment)
Although the Abbey’s daily services are much better nowadays with the office sung and Exposition on a Saturday evening, a Missa Cantata and proper confession times would be nice.

“The only boarding stable for Bicycles in Boston”
Note: I love the way it takes human ideas and language a while to catch up to new technology. This is an ad for a “boarding stable” ( historically a place to leave your horses) for bicycles where you can “put your wheel up at the Inn” and it can be “cleaned and cared for” while you do your business in town.
Personally I like to imagine all the bicycles having tea while they wait, but I’m weird that way….
