Before electricity was widely available a number of lighting systems existed to project slide shows and movies (and to illuminate people).  Calcium lighting was an early system that involved heating (with oxygen and hydrogen gases) a cylinder of lime, producing some pretty bright light.  And yes, the phrase “in the limelight” refers to this type of lighting.
