The Magdalen Reading (about 1525). Ambrosius Benson (ca. 1495/1500-1550). Italian painter who became a part of the Northern Renaissance. The Magdalen is shown with her attribute, the pot of ointment with which she anointed Christ. This is one of many versions of the composition by Benson. The design may ultimately derive from a figure such as that in ‘The Magdalen Reading’ by Rogier van der Weyden. It seems to have been a popular subject in the Low Countries in the 16th century.
