Spoiled Sherlock: The Horror of Spoilers in 1893
There has been much debate about the spoilers for BBC Sherlock’s episode featuring the classic “death” scene of our favorite detective and his criminal alter-ego. Mark Gatiss, show runner, lightly teased his fans by tweeting
So I thought is might be amusing, in a twisted way, to explore spoilers as they existed in 1893, which Sherlock’s trip to Switzerland was unknown to the masses.
If people remain interested, I’m happy to post more, as there was quite a bit of spoilering done by the press around this issue.
The real fun will begin when I start to analyze the communication theory behind modern ideas of spoilers and compare them with historic reactions. I think I will need to have access to the historical archives of some major British papers. Personal correspondence of the editors would be required.
